Everything you need to know about flaxseed

The flax is a small, graceful plant with beautiful blue flowers. It grows in height for of 20 to 30 inches. The seeds are places in small capsules. Then the seed is grown it is tied in bundles. The seed has flattened, long shape and brown color.

When you dip it in water it gets wiped with mucous layer. Flaxseed has no smell and it is tasteless. They should be harvest in late summer or early autumn. From the broken or g rinded seeds is made flax oil witch is used for protection of the wooden surfaces. Some veterinarians give the oil to some big animals for regulation of the digestion, the jelly made of flaxseed is used as food for the calves.

The flax is an industrial plant that doesn’t requires special conditions for development. That’s why it succeeds in most of the countries in Europe and Asia. In some countries the flaxseed is used in pastries. In this case that have laxative effects. 

The flax as a medicine

From the flax as a medicine are used the seeds and the oil. The flaxseed is full with mucus and unsaturated fats, that’s why it is used by people who have problems with digestion, the bowls and the lungs. If the seed is taken as whole it can reduce irritation on the digestive organs. It can also absorb liquids and swell by absorbing  the poisons and converting them in jelly so they wouldn’t be harmful for the human body. If you brake the seeds before eating them the will release essential fat acids. In a small portions it is useful for the urinary system. In Portugal it is used as a traditional remedy for wounds, witch is made from flaxseeds and red wine. It can also be used for acne, addiction, prostate cancer and wrinkles.


Flaxseed – for constipation take 1-2 tablespoons of the seed and after that drink 1-2 glasses of water. The seeds will swell in the stomach. The seed can be mixed with milk, cheese, honey, cereals and you can have it as a breakfast. It is very important to take large amounts of water in that time.

Tea– It is used for coughs and sore throat, but used with honey and lemon juice. Coatings- brake flax seeds and apply to wounds.

For rinsing- dry the seeds in water so they release the mucosal mass, it can be takes for gastritis and pharyngitis.

Oil – the essential fat acids witch are found in the flaxseed oil, it helps with eczema, menstrual disorder, rheumatoid arthritis and atherosclerosis. Two tablespoons of flaxseed oil should be added to the daily diet.

The whole plant – it is used for constipation, for increasing of the liver and against rheumatic pains. 


Adults and children over 12 should take 5 to 10 grams flaxseed soaked in water, 3 times daily. The effects are visible after 18-24 hours. The therapy should least for 2-3 days.

Children from 6 t0 12 should use half of the dose for adults.

Children below 6 should get doctors permission to use flaxseeds.

Consuming large doses of flaxseed could have bad influence for the cardiovascular system. But consuming to 50 grams of flax seeds a day (witch is equal to 20g of flaxseed oil) can’t be bad for the health.
